Meet the Beekeeper

Josiah is passionate about sustaining communities through traditional food growing and harvesting methods.

Raised in rural Shenandoah County, Virginia, Josiah was introduced to hog butchering, apple cider pressing, deer hunting, and beekeeping from a young age. He learned these means of providing for one’s family and community from elders, men and women who carried on these skills as not only a way of life but a craft.

Shenandoah Gold is the outcome of Josiah’s 13 years of beekeeping experience, an adventure he began with his mom in middle school.

For the last decade he has worked as a volunteer mentor for many new beekeepers through teaching classes, running training programs, and offering 1-1 support, especially for the Beekeepers Guild at Church of the Lamb.

He takes pride in following regenerative practices with no chemical treatments or honey additives. When you taste Shenandoah Gold, you are tasting not only a tradition passed down for generations, but the flavors of the Valley’s rich fruits and flora which nourish our precious pollinators and us.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We offer raw wildflower honey. All honey is harvested from our hives and minimally processed to preserve its natural enzymes and flavor. It is not pasteurized.

  • We follow natural and organic beekeeping practices. We do not use synthetic pesticides. When Varroa mite treatment is necessary, we use only approved organic acids such as oxalic acid, which leave no residue in honey.

  • We only harvest surplus honey — always leaving the colony with ample stores for winter. Frames are gently removed using bee brushes or escape boards, minimizing stress to the hive. The bees' welfare is our top priority.

  • We currently manage around 40 hives across our property and several partner locations nearby. Each hive is inspected regularly throughout the season to monitor colony health and productivity.

  • Yes! We invite you to join the regular meetings and conversations of Church of the Lamb’s Beekeeper’s Guild to learn more and to begin raising your own bees.
